a bon viveur’s new quest

Well, I did not see this coming: I have now switched to a vegetarian diet… with the exception of an occasional taste from the bounty of the sea.

Perish the thought my friends would say: how can a bon viveur like me can change a diet so drastically!  Well, it has happened and the best thing about it, I am loving every moment (so far!).

There were a few triggers of course which led me to this course of action: 3 years ago I had a heart attack, ironically of all times preparing a Thanksgiving meal for my friends – a few days from my milestone Birthday.

Instead sharing my birthday with friends, I spent it having a splint inserted to prop open an artery to my heart!

What was to have been a 20 minute procedure lasted over 3 hours.  During the surgery the surgeon informed me if they could not successfully insert this object into my vein I would have to immediately undergo OPEN-HEART surgery!  (yes they keep you awake during the surgery – amazing to even be able to watch what they are watching on the closed circuit TV! Very extraordinary – almost an out of body experience.)  Thankfully he finally was able to do so…

Afterwards he told me he needed to schedule an additional surgery to insert another stint into a different artery!

I felt there had to be a different way, so this is my journey…
